Seagate provides a Paragon driver for reading/writing to NTFS, but by installing. You'd still have the AFP or SMB file-sharing software to worry. Question: Q: Free Paragon Driver for Mac OS from seagate? My only question is this Paragon from Seagate, can it detect other brand HDD(ntfs)?
If you open the Disk Utility application on your Mac with the disk connected, you should be able to see it in the list of disks on the left hand column of the Disk Utility window. If you click on the the partition (i.e. The name you see in your file tree when the disk mounts under OS X) what do you see for the Format at the bottom of the window?
If it is Mac OS Extended or a something similar then your disk is using the HFS+ file system, which is the default for OS X. This file system type is not natively supported by Windows, which is why the disk will not mount when you plug it into your laptop. You have a couple of options:. Reformat the disk to FAT32, which is the lowest common denominator in file systems between OS X and Windows. In addition to limitation to file sizes. Depends on the filesystem type and partitioning scheme whether it'll work on both.
If the hard drive were formatted for HFS it would not show up on the Windows Computer. If the Partition Scheme were Apple Partition Map, it would also not show up. For maximum compatibility, back up everything from the external hard drive onto your Mac. Open Disk Utility, select the external hard drive and go to Partition. Under Volume Scheme, choose 1 Partition, then click Options. Choose Master Boot Record. Then choose MSDOS under the Format menu.
Then click Apply. Your hard drive should work on either computer at that point, as well as others you may try to use it on. If you want something that both machines / OSes can read a write, and that can act as an emergency boot drive for either machine, do this:. Reformat the drive, using the GUID Partition Table (GPT) as the low-level partition table format. Avoid Master Boot Record, which Intel Macs can't boot from. Also avoid Apple Partition Map, which Windows machines would have no clue about. Give the drive one HFS+J (Mac OS Extended, Journaled) partition large enough to install Mac OS X onto (10GB+).
This volume format accommodates Mac OS X and Mac files the best. Give the drive one FAT32 (MS-DOS) partition, which both Mac OS X and Windows can read and write. This is a good place to put files that you want both Mac and Windows to have read/write access to.
The FAT volume format is showing its age, but a huge variety of OSes know how to work with it. If you want the drive to have a volume that's more optimal for Windows than FAT, give it an NTFS partition as well. This would be a good volume to install Windows onto, but beware that Mac OS X only has read-only support for NTFS built-in. If you want your Mac to be able to write to this partition, you'll need third-party software to enable this on Mac OS X.
I have a Seagate external 'for Mac' drives that uses the Paragon HFS+ Driver for Windows in Windows 8.1 to read the drive and was wondering if it will work in Windows 10 because I read an Amazon review where someone said it doesn't. Can someone confirm if they upgraded to Win 10 and can see and read their Mac formatted external Seagate drive. I get no warning from compatibility report about this either.

Yeah I read an Amazon review where some guy paid $40 for the latest full version of their software i.e. Paragon because they had the same problem with the Seagate OEM version. The latest full version from Paragon is guaranteed to be Win10 compatible unlike Seagate's version 9.1 which most likely isn't since Paragon is trying to get people to upgrade to the latest full version.
Also, guy from Amazon review said he contacted Seagate about the issue and they had no clue and just told him to try redownloading the version they provide on their website so I wouldn't hold my breath. Below is a reply from Seagate Support 'Thank you for contacting Seagate Support. The version we have has been tested on numerous Windows 10 systems. In every case it has worked properly, as there were no major changes to functionality between Windows 8 and 10. As the version has been tested as compatible, no update was required by Paragon.
Check how the drive is listed in Disk Management. Right-click the Start icon, select Disk management, then look for the Backup Plus drive. Does it have a drive letter assigned? If not, can you right-click it and manually assign a drive letter? We have seen one Windows 10 system that would not show any externals, even if Disk Management assigned drive letters, no matter what format they used.
Only creating shortcuts on the desktop to the drive worked, it would never show the drive letters under This PC, so verifying how the drive shows in Disk Management could let us know if your system is reacting in a similar way. Please reply to this email if you require further assistance or give us a call at 1-800-SEAGATE. We are available from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Central time Monday - Friday.' I had success with the following: 1.
Uninstall the Paragon HFS+ Software from Add/Remove Programs 2. Plug in the Seagate Hard drive. It is important for the external hard drive to be plugged in prior to running the software.
3. Right Click the HFS4win.exe file (the install file from Seagate) 4. Select 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' 5. Follow the instructions to reinstall the program 6. Try the drive again When I selected 'Troubleshoot Compatibility', it suggested the best mode was 'Windows Vista'.
I selected 'Test Software' and it ran the program without issue and I now have access to my external hard drive again. I did not need to go any further.
